Demi Moore Spent a Wild Night on the Town Prior to Treatment

Exhaustion, seemingly a common affliction but also one for which only ultra-wealthy celebrities are ever treated, has overcome Demi Moore. Whether it was the rigors of trying to keep the interest of younger ex-husband Ashton Kutcher, who is 33-years-old, or something else entirely is up in the air. What is clear, however, is that before she went into treatment for “exhaustion,” she was partying it up with her young daughter, Rumer Willis. Maybe trying to keep up with the 23-year-old is what did her in.

The 49-year-old actress went out on January 11 wearing a short black skirt and a striped sweater. Arriving at Beacher’s Madhouse at the Roosevelt Hotel at about 11 P.M., she was at first rather reserved, but began to heat up as the night wore on. Said one person who was at the scene that evening, “When she first arrived, she kept to herself, but she started loosening up and getting into party mode. She seemed really happy to be out with her daughter’s friends.”

It didn’t appear that Moore was drinking that evening, but did seem to be enjoying the attentions of young men, especially 90210 actor Ryan Rottman. Said the same source, “She found ways to touch him all night, and at one point when he was in front of her, she was grinding on his butt. His shirt came unbuttoned, and she started tickling his bare chest playfully.” That does, indeed, sound incredibly exhausting, so perhaps that part of the mystery is solved.

Surprises and Other News from the 2012 Oscar Nominations

Some surprises and some apparent snubs came out yesterday morning as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the Oscar nominations for the 2012 Academy Awards. While Rooney Mara was nominated for best actress for her role in “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” the director of the film, David Fincher, was left off the list for best director, and the movie itself was left off the list for best picture. Tilda Swinton was presumably booted from contention for best actress by virtue of Mara’s inclusion.

Going in, many thought that Michael Fassbender’s portrayal of a sex addict in Steve McQueen’s “Shame” would make him a surefire bet for a best actor nominations, but he was mysteriously left out. On the other hand, Demian Bichir was nominated for his role as a gardener living in Los Angeles in the film “A Better Life.” Another selection that was something of a surprise was the inclusion of Jonah Hill, better known for his comedic work, getting a nod for his work in “Moneyball,” with Brad Pitt.

One of the biggest mysteries going into the selection process was the number of films that would be nominated for best picture. A new rule dictates that each nominee for best picture must receive at least 5% of the votes from the 5,783 voting members. Many thought that this would reduce the field dramatically, though 9 films were still nominated with the new rules in place. Among the surprises in this category were “Extremely Loud & Incredibly close” and “The Tree of Life.” Left off the list were the aforementioned “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and “Bridesmaids.”

WikiLeaks’ Founder Julian Assange Launches Television Talk Show

WikiLeaks now has information on Julian Assange – and the rumor is that the site’s highly controversial founder is planning on producing his own television talk show. The site claims that Assange plans a show that will explore the world from the perspectives of some of the most powerful and influential people that, perhaps, we’ve never heard of. There is no word at this time as to who might be a guest on Assange’s show, nor where or how the show will be filmed.

Assange is currently fighting a legal battle to avoid extradition to Sweden on charges of sexual assault and misconduct, so it’s unclear exactly how the show is going to be managed. But, Assange’s post on WikiLeaks is very clear about his vision for the show: “Through this series I will explore the possibilities for our future in conversations with those who are shaping it. Are we heading towards utopia, or dystopia and how we can set our paths? This is an exciting opportunity to discuss the vision of my guests in a new style of show that examines their philosophies and struggles in a deeper and clearer way than has been done before.”

The press release about the show notes the ongoing upheaval in the Middle East and the breakdown of the rule of law and the sovereign economic crises engulfing the West. Assange believes he is well-positioned to host a show that attempts to identify the complex machinations that are occurring around the globe and to explore how individuals can engage with one another to effect a more positive outcome.

WikiLeaks’ notes that the Assange show will air in ten weekly half-hour segments, beginning in the middle of March of this year.

Original Tuskegee Airmen Attend Red Tails Screening

George Lucas’ latest film, “Red Tails,” tells the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, fighter pilots who were part of an all-black World War II squadron. Starring Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding, Jr., the movie is set in 1944, as the war in Europe was still raging on and the outcome uncertain. Short on pilots, the U.S. military at that time already had in place what was considered an “experimental” program of all African-American pilots – the so-called “Tuskegee training program.” The pilots were young and not tested in battle, but needs dictated that they were forced into the precarious situation.

Last Friday, three of the original aviators from the group attended a special screening of the movie, and were honored for their courage and contributions to the U.S. war effort. The movie has been called a “passion project” of Lucas’, and he apparently spent $ 58 million of his own money to make the film.

Director Anthony Hemingway noted that his job was intense. Said Hemingway, “I went to Tuskegee, Alabama and actually had the chance to look into the eyes of living history and when I looked into their eyes and connected with them it really it, it registered and the weight of the world was on my shoulders at that point.” Added Hemingway, “It’s not a shock that the system or Hollywood didn’t want to tell the story. We’re thankful that George did what he did and had the passion to….help tell this history.” Red Tails also opened nationwide in U.S. theaters on Friday.

Adult Film Industry Threatens to Leave Los Angeles Over Condom Controversy

Los Angeles, and specifically the San Fernando Valley, is the undisputed home of the porn industry. It is estimated that approximately 90% of the adult films produced in the United States come from the Los Angeles area. The new city ordinance that has just passed the Los Angeles city council by a 9-1 vote would require that all actors in adult films created within the city wear condoms. This has drawn the ire of the adult film industry, which claims that it is already highly regulated and that its actors are required to be tested at least every 30 days for STDs and other blood-borne pathogens.

The film industry is also claiming that there is no market for adult films that contain the use of condoms, especially internationally. And with the struggling economy and the ubiquity of free Internet pornography, the adult film industry is already struggling.

Of course, the simple answer for the adult film producers is to simply move their operations outside the Los Angeles area. “The only thing that the city could potentially achieve is losing some film permit money and driving some productions away, but you can’t actually compel an industry to create a product that the market doesn’t want,” said Christian Mann, general manager of Evil Angel, one of the largest production companies in the adult film industry.

The other side of the argument comes from groups like the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which points out that California state law already requires the use of condoms when workers are exposed to blood-borne pathogens. The group notes that the law is rarely followed or enforced in the state and that the new city ordinance is designed to help with that enforcement effort.

Rob Lowe Won’t Reveal Source for Peyton Manning Retirement Tweets

Rob Lowe sat down with Ellen DeGeneres yesterday and discussed his now infamous tweets about the possible retirement of legendary Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Peyton Manning. Lowe explained to Ellen that he’s a “regular guy” who is a huge Colts fan and a huge Peyton Manning fan. He said that he tweets regularly about sports and that this was just another example of that. Of course, Lowe implied in his tweets that he had a credible source for the Manning retirement rumor: “Hearing my fave, #18 Peyton Manning will not return to #NFL,” Lowe wrote. “Wow. #Colts. My people are saying Manning will retire today. What do you hear? Colts fans, let’s hope my info is wrong. Don’t like being wrong, but this time…I’m hoping.”

The major sports and news outlets quickly tried to confirm the rumor, but the only official word is that Manning has no plans to retire or make any sort of announcement in the near future. Manning is still recovering from neck fusion surgery that forced him to miss the entire 2011 NFL season. Given the uncertain nature of his injury and recovery, it’s certainly possible that he may be forced to retire or possibly move on to another team during the upcoming offseason.

When asked by Ellen where he heard the scoop, Lowe declined to reveal his source, stating simply, “I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you.” Well played, Rob Lowe. If Lowe’s Colts’ fandom is to be believed, it’s a safe assumption that he was simply tweeting what he felt was credible information about Peyton Manning, probably assuming that others would have heard something as well. We’ll find out soon enough whether Rob Lowe’s source was correct.

Paula Deen Facing Backlash for Diabetes Revelation

Paula Deen revealed earlier this week that she was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes about three years ago, even though she never revealed her condition and continued to promote the high-fat, decadent meals that have become her signature. As a result, she’s facing a firestorm of criticism, from within the food industry and the general public, that she is a hypocrite. Some, including celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain, have openly stated their opposition to Deen’s actions: “When your signature dish is hamburger in between a doughnut, and you’ve been cheerfully selling this stuff knowing all along that you’ve got Type 2 diabetes, it’s in bad taste if nothing else.”

Deen counters with the fact that she didn’t feel comfortable revealing her diagnosis because she didn’t feel like she had an appropriate amount of information or helpful advice to offer her viewers. But now that she has been hired as a spokesperson for diabetes medication and she continues to promote her traditional Southern fare, many are questioning whether that’s the right approach.

“I am who I am,” said Deen. “I think the South gets a bad rap sometimes, saying our food is very unhealthy, but frankly I don’t think that’s the case. I think it’s like any other food, whether it be Italian, French, Cajun. They all can be very high in calories and that’s where we have to practice portion control and moderation.”

And while there is certainly an element of hypocrisy – or at least poor form – to what Deen has done, it’s also silly to suggest that Deen is somehow encouraging people to eat the types of meals she makes on her show regularly. Anyone who has watched an episode of her cooking show knows that it’s not the type of food to incorporate into your daily diet. It is Southern comfort food for special occasions and nothing more.

Lindsay Lohan in Consideration to Play Elizabeth Taylor in Lifetime Movie

Relax, people – it’s only a Lifetime movie. Many fans of the great Elizabeth Taylor are up in arms over the rumor that Lindsay Lohan is being considered to play the film legend in an upcoming movie. And while it remains to be seen whether the rumors have any truth to them, it’s never a bad idea for a producer to float these types of headline-grabbing stories about a project – even if the initial public reaction is negative.

Despite her ongoing legal woes and apparent struggles with alcohol and drug addiction, Lindsay Lohan has managed to claw her way back into the news via a Playboy pictorial and the aforementioned rumors about a possible return to acting.

The Hollywood Reporter noted that Lohan was being considered for the role of Taylor, but that the project is still in development and has been since May of last year. The story also mentions the interesting fact that Lohan is now being considered for the role of Liz Taylor, following a Playboy pictorial that was an obvious homage to Marilyn Monroe. Lindsay’s apparently tapping some major icons as she attempts to resurrect her career.

Since the Playboy pictorial hit the stands, Lindsay has managed to stay out of the negative spotlight, but it’s unclear whether she would be capable of returning to work on a regular basis. That, of course, would be the risk of trying to work with someone like Lohan at this turbulent point in her life. That said, if she managed to hold it together during production and put together a credible performance, there would be tremendous upside, both for herself and for Lifetime.
